The President’s
Corner
Merry Christmas and best wishes for a great
new year!
Thanks to everyone who participated in the
snow dance. Given trail conditions I
think we can pause for the next little while.
Thanks especially to our groomers for staying
on top of each new dump of snow.
Conditions during December easily rival the best of last season.
Membership is up, Jack Rabbit registrations
have been terrific, ski rentals are ready to go, adult lessons are in the works
(check the Burrow to sign up) and planning for events is underway. If you are interested in volunteering contact
your favourite director or send an e-mail to ski@vianet.ca
.
Raffle tickets are on sale in the
Burrow and from Directors! Prizes
include a Current Designs kayak donated by White Squall, a trip on the
Your Board of Directors is in the process of considering priorities for the next five years. Our intention is to complete a review of all aspects of the Club. We intend to work at this over the next several months to get a good idea of what needs attention over the long term and then to determine strategies to address those priorities. Attached to this newsletter, (page six) please find a draft framework that will form the basis of the review. Over the next two months, we will start the review by discussing the ski trails. We will then move on
to other considerations. Ideally
the review will be completed by May 2008.
If you have a comments to share with respect to trail
improvements/changes please forward an e-mail to my attention at
chaser@vianet.ca.

Season Schedule

January 19 – Super Snack Attack
January 25 – Jackrabbit Ski Tournament
February 2 – Marshmallow Roast

on Feb. 24
March 1 – Year End BBQ and Awards Day
Jackrabbit
is off to a great start and we haven’t even reached January 5th (the
first day) yet!! To this point we have
135 kids registered and more interested in joining!!!
Kids
involved in the Track Attack Racing Rabbits program did a “ski camp” at the
club a couple of weekends ago. They
stayed overnight in the Burrow on a Friday night, played lots of games, did
lots of skiing, and hung out. It was
awesome. Ask one of the Racing Rabbits
to tell you more about it.
Distance Club: Kids should be keeping track of kilometres
skied already. The distance club section
of the bulletin board will be up soon and distance sheets will be available
then.
As always, we need volunteers. We particularly need folks (parents or
others) who can take on the teaching of a group. This teaching is often done collaboratively
with other adults and does not mean that you have to be the head honcho every
weekend. As well, there are loads of
great resources that we have that makes the planning a snap. And…. It’s FUN. Talk to Graham or Zack if you are interested.
NEW THIS YEAR:
All
leaders will wear “pinnies”. With
increasing numbers of Jackrabbits, leaders and groups, this should make it
easier for parents and Jackrabbits to know who’s who and where their group is.
With
our large numbers, we have also decided to have an adult in the Burrow during
Jackrabbits. This adult can trouble
shoot situations if they arise. Injuries
or other incidents are rare but can happen.
So, each week there will be a “Jackrabbit Attendant” in the Burrow. The role of this person will be to help with
sick or injured kids and provide support until the child’s parent can take
over.
If
you’re interested in doing this for one of the 8 weeks, talk to Graham or
Zack. This is a great role for parents
who may not be skiers. As well, one perk
of this job is unlimited, free, hot chocolate!!
VOLUNTEERS:
Did
we mention we need volunteers?? The
Jackrabbit programme is run entirely by volunteers, many of whom are
parents. It is a great crowd to be
involved with. There are many ways to
get involved and be a huge help! You do
not have to be a skier to be a Jackrabbit volunteer. We have many non-skiing needs. Talk to Graham or Zack if you are interested.
See
you on the snow.

Racing Rabbits Have Fun At Recent Ski
Camp
Racing
Rabbits are local jackrabbit skiers who range in age from 10 to 14. They are interested in improving their Nordic
ski racing skills. Racing Rabbits will
participate in local races with a couple of races further afield.
As mentioned above, the Racing Rabbit
Ski Team season started with a fun filled two day campout at the Burrow. This camp was held in mid-December on one of
the coldest nights of the year so far.
Skiers took part in many activities
from waxing classic and skate skis to skiing into the bush to find the perfect
Christmas tree. Some worked on piling firewood,
making salad, setting the table, watching a Knight's Tale, and learning some of
the finer points of skate skiing.
The
burrow was remarkably warm through the cold night and proved to be an ideal
facility for the occasion. Special thanks to
the Board of Directors, as well Cec. Smith for trouble shooting early
morning water issues. Finally, thanks so
much to Jesse Dyer and Kaitlin Chantler for providing their expertise to the
camp. They are a product of our clubs dedication to providing opportunity and
skills to young people as they develop into top racers, cool people and life
long skiers.
An awesome time was had by all.

THANKS
TO GNSCC, PETER DALEMAN AND DON BRISBANE
It was such a great Christmas present … to have the GNSCC
trails groomed and Burrow open and warm on Christmas Day. The trails had many happy skiers out enjoying
the trails, either digesting their turkey, or anticipating a great feast after
a ski. The conditions were perfect.
Thanks so much to the Club, Peter Daleman for opening the
Burrow and lighting the fire, and Don for grooming the trails. It was very much appreciated.
Sincerely,
Wendy Grater, and all others who enjoyed the trails!
Deadline for February Beaver Tale Submissions
Please have reports, articles,
advertisements, to me by Sunday evening, January 27th. I would like to have the Tales out before the
Masters starts.

Sounder
Sam wants to know, “Are you getting
ready for the Sounder? Past time to get
those limbs limbered, those skis waxed and ready. Register early for this fun event on our
professionally groomed trails.”
The annual
Sounder Competition/Ski Tour Event is scheduled for Sunday February 24. Registration forms will be available in the
Burrow, in the February newsletter and posted on the club web site.
We will need lots of volunteers for
both the Sounder, for registration, timing, marshalling, the award
presentations and so on. Please call
Peter Daleman at 746-2513 or e-mail to pdaleman@cogeco.ca if you can help out
with planning and/ or on the day of the events.
Well what can
you say? Wow! We had skiing all December. With no huge fall and many little ones the
trails have been in the best condition.
Groomers have
been busy with great results.
One can only
look to January and say, ‘Don’t stop now.’
Feb. 1 – 3, 2007,
GNSCC will host the Ontario Masters Championships. We are hoping for between 80 and 100
participants for this fun event. So far,
we have over 20 entries, and with the excellent snow conditions, we are hoping
for many more in the next few weeks. You do not have to be an expert skier to
take part – this is a fun and ‘inclusive’ event, as long as you are over the
age of 30.
It will feature the following events:
Fri. Feb 1 1 pm 11
km skate
Sat. Feb 2 10 am 11
km classic
Sat. Feb 2 1 pm 4
x 4 relay
Sun. Feb 3 10 am 22
km skate
We will also be
having a ‘wine and cheese’ reception at the Burrow, courtesy of the Ontario
Masters Association, on Friday night, and a banquet dinner on Saturday night,
location TBA.
This will be a great
event to be part of! Any skier over the
age of 30 from GNSCC is welcome to participate! An application form is
attached, page 8.
The organizing committee also needs volunteers. We will
need helpers in the following areas:
-
trails – preparation & marking
-
trails – marshals
-
registration & bibs
-
timing:
start/finish
-

-
burrow help
Please contact Wendy Grater or Katja Mathys if you are able to help in
any way.
