Beaver Tales
The Presidents
Corner
November is here! With any luck at all we will be shovelling
snow and skiing soon.
Thanks to everyone who
helped clear trails.
We are concerned for the
safety of members and trail users. Trails are closed for the hunting season.
We are looking for a good
quality Television and DVD player
for the Burrow. This equipment will be
used to support the coaching of Jackrabbits and interested adults. In addition we hope to be able to share with
members young and more seasoned the excitement of elite racing and club
events. If you can help with this, send
an e-mail to: ski@vianet.ca or contact your favourite
director.
We need an individual or
small group to take on the organization of Women
on Skis. Jane Sutcliff did an
outstanding job last year but is unavailable to be as involved as she has
been. Jane is very willing to share her
copious notes and organizational strategies with anyone who would welcome the
challenge of becoming more deeply involved in this very popular event. If you
can help with this event, please send an e-mail to ski@vianet.ca or contact me chaser@vianet.ca (746-6593). Thanks!
We look forward to the
screening of an award winning film from the Banff Film Festival
Nov.10 at the Burrow. For more details
read on!
Once again many thanks are
due to your Club Directors for their tireless work in organizing all of the
details essential to preparing for the season.
If you have run out of
raffle tickets and need more to sell send an e-mail to chaser@vianet.ca. We deliver!
Please resume snow dancing. See you on the trails.

CAUTION
Deer hunting season runs
from November 5 to 17 this year.
Particularly if you brush trails or hike on them mark these dates on
your calendar.
Be advised. As a result of concern for the safety of
everyone, all trails are closed during deer hunting season.
Ed. I
missed warning that moose season was the last full week of October. Does that explain the scuff on the
Kobota? Well, better warned for next
year.
The kids can sign
up.
The Jackrabbit programme will run
again this season on Saturday mornings from January 5 to March 1.
In the past few years the programme has been updated by Cross County Canada and offers a fun and complete progression for kids (and parents) who want to enjoy Nordic skiing.
Registration:
Registration for the Jackrabbit programme will be held at the Burrow on
Saturday, December 1, 2007 from 10:00 to 12:00.
Cost: $35.00 per child to a maximum of $80.00 per
family for GNSCC members,
$40.00 per child to a maximum of $90.00 per
family for non-members,
$50.00 per child for Track Attack
Deadline for December Beaver Tale Submissions
I would like to have the next
newsletter out before Jackrabbit sign up.
Please have reports and articles to me by November 26th.
E-mail: masonj@vianet.ca
The Bunnies: This is games and songs on skis. Kids under the age of six, must be
accompanied by a parent.
Levels 1, 2, and 3: This is usually for kids aged 6
to 9 years old. These levels focus mostly on
classical techniques with many games and activities to practice balance and
weight transfer. A parent must accompany kids in level 1.
Levels 4: This level introduces kids to the
techniques of skate skiing.
Track Attack ~ Recreational: This level is for kids
10 years old or older who want to keep improving their skills, and are
recreational skiers.
Track
Attack ~ Racing Rabbits: "
Racing Rabbits"is back for the second year. This is
for kids age 10 to 14 who would like to fine tune
their skills and learn to train for competition. It
will involve one extra ski practice during the week,
and some travelling to other ski clubs in our region
to participate in loppets and ski tours.
The Jackrabbits depend on volunteers
for a safe and fun programme. Jackrabbit
leaders learn, coach, and have fun together with the kids at
We invite parents, and all other
club members who are interested, to sign up as volunteers for the Jackrabbit
programme. Contact Graham Poole or Zack
Crafts.
No experience
necessary. If you enjoy sharing your
enthusiasm for skiing, and you have
been known to have "gummy worms" in your ski jacket, you too, can be
a Jackrabbit leader!
We are planning a meeting for all
the Jackrabbit
volunteers for the 2008 season at the Burrow on
Thursday, December 6 at 7pm. We hope to
see you there.
Thanks, Zack and Graham
Did you hear about the shopper who was upset with Dollarama? Very confusing. Not a single product had a price on it.
Membership
The
Club Membership form is on the last page of this newsletter. We ask you to complete it as soon as
possible. If you pay before December 2,
2007 there is a reduced membership fee. Fees can be mailed directly to the
Club, or paid in person, on Registration
Day/Ski Swap/ Jackrabbit Signup: DECEMBER 1/07.
There were only
minor changes to the fee structure to provide equity between single and couples
membership. The board of directors
determined that our current fee structure appears to strike the appropriate
balance between meeting financial needs and being affordable.
Because of this
philosophy, our club relies significantly on the generosity of donations; it is
a large part of how we keep the club affordable for all community members. Please consider making a donation as part of
your membership. There is a spot for
this on the application. Our club has
charitable status. We will happily issue a tax-deductible receipt. And the Club does have a registered number.
If you plan on
skiing more than 8 times, a club membership will: save you money, provide you
with unlimited skiing on regularly groomed trails 7 days per week, remove the
need to pay daily passes, supply a heated burrow and waxing room, organized
social events, programs and races for various ages & abilities, reduced
fees for courses & clinics, send you a regular, informative newsletters and
give you voting rights at an annual general meeting. How could anyone resist?
When completing
your application please be sure to check off the column where you would be
willing to volunteer. Also please ensure
you submit a waiver form signed by all members over the age of 17 and by a
parent for those under. Your tags and
tax receipt for any donation will be provided at the club when you go for your
first ski.
Also, please
provide the ‘local’ municipality/township where your residence or second home
is located. This information is needed
for us to successfully apply to local municipalities for financial support.
See you on the Trails!

Put Sunday February 24/08 on your calendar.
The Sounder ski race/tour will be held on that date.
Even with postponing the 2007 event due to the late start of the snow season, the event proved as popular as ever. So we are again holding the Sounder on the fourth Sunday of February.
Start conditioning those ski muscles, now.
Official entry forms will be
available next month.
This is a repeat call for
volunteers to help out with the Sounder for registration, timing, marshalling,
and award presentations etc. Please call
Peter Daleman at 746-2513 or e-mail to pdaleman@cogeco.ca
if you can help out with planning or helping out on the day of the Sounder.
FREE! BLUE BARRELS:
Black Feather has a number of
60 litre barrels that are FREE to a good home. These are similar to the ‘canoe
tripping’ barrels, EXCEPT they are
slightly shorter, and slightly wider. So they do not fit our barrel pack straps.
They are air-tight and light
weight, but not quite as durable as the ‘regular’ canoe tripping barrels. They would be perfect for storing items from
moisture, rodents or other dislikable things.
If you would like one or two
contact Wendy at 746-6534 or info@blackfeather.com>.
You can either pick them up at my home, or I can deliver them to the ski
club.

“IN SEARCH OF THE COASTAL WOLVES’” is a
spectacular documentary film, made in
Choice’ award at the
Banff Festival of Mountain Films.
Wildlife biologist and field researcher
Gudrun Pfleuger (also a
keen cross country skier) takes us on a wonderful journey through this
coastal landscape, in
search of a unique pack of coastal wolves.
It was while filming the wolf
documentary that Gudrun
was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Not
willing to let the illness take over who she was, she embarked on a spiritual
journey caught on film for all to see.
Now, Gudrun has finished the film, and
treatment for the cancer. The
documentary has already received recognition, world wide. It has been aired in
GNSCC, courtesy of Wendy Grater and Black
Feather, is excited to give you the opportunity to
see this wonderful film,
as a kick off to the season.
The evening will include:
8 pm
wine/cheese/tea/coffee and dessert,
compliments of Black Feather

Believe it or
not, except for a couple of Saturdays when work parties were out brushing,
weather this October has been much better than last year. Most of our trails have been cleaned and are
ready for the snow season. Hopefully,
the remaining work will be completed in the next few weeks. Many thanks to Greg Mason for co-ordinating
the work parties each October weekend and to the volunteers who gave freely of
their time do to the brushing and chainsaw work.
The new RTV
assisted the work parties in carrying the equipment thus reducing the tedium of
long walks to the job site.
We have been able
to do some ditching, clearing out some old brush and creating a few more
grooming equipment turnarounds. The
large fallen hemlock at the bottom of the first hill has been removed along
with all the brush in that area.
Think snow!!

Get a variety
of skiers on a team.
For those who ski a lot – take a
challenge and sign up fewer skiers on your team.
Registration:
I will
register the teams with Cross Country Canada. Registration starts Nov. 1st,
but I can register teams later. Logging of km starts Dec 1st each year. In
cases of poor snow conditions, roller skiing, jogging and walking may be
substituted.
Cool
prizes:
There will be Team and Club
awards. Some lucky skiers will be
selected to receive tickets for the Olympics.
Contact me if you have a team you would
like to register or if you are a skier who would like to join a team. I will act as our club co-ordinator, but I
need one captain per team who will update me regularly.
There will be more details about the
project from CCC shortly. I am very
excited. I think this is a great way to
capture the Olympic spirit and share great skiing experiences with club
members. Please join in. All you need to do is log the kilometers you ski.

Introduction
to Community Coaching Clinic is for beginner coaches (or experienced ones who
want to brush up and get new ideas). It
will be held on Saturday, November 24.
We have 4
Jackrabbit leaders who want to take the workshop, but a minimum of 6 are needed
to run the clinic.
Seems like a
good place to go while the man of the house sits with the kids watching the
Santa Claus Parade OR versa visa. Did I
get the right Saturday?
Interested?
