President’s Report to the Annual General Meeting

April 10, 2007

Despite a slow start to the season as a consequence of uncooperative weather conditions we have had another outstanding year.

The dedication and commitment of Directors and other volunteers have once again served the membership and our guests very well during the 2006-2007 season.  Many thanks to everyone who helped organize and participated in all Club events and activities.  Thanks to John Mason for assembling Beaver Tales each month.

The development of a new trail, the Wolf, the acquisition of a more powerful snow machine and top of the line grooming equipment were highlights of the past season that enhanced the quality of the ski experience for members and guests.

These enhancements while important were secondary to the energy, enthusiasm and involvement of young skiers from across the District of West Parry Sound.  The Jackrabbit Program, the Elementary Ski Race, the Humphrey Classic and the outstanding achievements of coaches and skiers representing Parry Sound High School at the Provincial Championships exemplify a significant part of the vision that drove the development of the Club 27 years ago.

The warm and invitational sense of community and family involvement that characterized the very early years of the development of the Club have been sustained and enhanced within the context of significant growth in membership to 485 individuals ranging in age from three to seventy-five years.  It is remarkable that we have been able to retain these core values while expanding our reputation as a ski destination for skiers from across the Province.  In addition to our usual excellent public relations we have entered into an agreement with the local Bed and Breakfast Association to further encourage guests to experience what we have to offer.

The Club is in a sound financial position going into 2007-2008.  As usual there are multiple competing priorities for enhancing and sustaining the quality of the ski experience.  The acquisition of new equipment to support trail preparation, expansion of the Parking area, enhancement of trails, additions to rental equipment and the hosting of an Ontario Master’s event are all on the horizon.

Thanks again to Directors and volunteers for their support during 2006-2007.

Trails and Grooming

The trails were cleared thanks to the assistance of a many volunteers co-ordinated  by Greg Mason.  It is always a challenge to do all the preparation work to be ready before the first major snowfall.  Bruce Ehgoetz spent many days on the tractor cleaning the brush from the existing trails and worked to build the new ‘Wolf Trail’.  We updated the maps and directional signs to reflect this new section of trail which joins part of the Cotton Trail.

We had a snowfall on Dec.2nd and 3rd  with continued favourable weather forecast we started packing the trails on Monday, Dec. 4th using the new roller packer continued with further grooming and track setting providing some skiing for a few days. Mother nature took all the snow away so we had to wait patiently until late January before we finally received enough snow to pack and groom some of the main trails. We received good snowfalls in February to finally allow us to open all the trails. We enjoyed good ski conditions for approximately 70 days, one of our shortest seasons.

The equipment, especially the new roller and Ginzu goomer along with the four stroke Skandic helped a great deal to maintain the trails in top condition. We sold the three Alpine snowmachines and gained some extra money for the club and avoided further expense on insurance and storage.

The club is purchasing a Kubota RTV 900 utility vehicle for trail maintenance use and possibly trail grooming. This replaces the ATV lost a few years ago.

There will be a regular inspection program of our main trails during the off-season. Various maintenance projects will be undertaken throughout the summer and fall to improve our trail system. We hope to complete the drainage work on the return section of the Lynx trail, put in a grooming equipment turnaround part way around the Lynx, remove some of the stumps from the Wolf, enlarge the parking lot for the special events, and place some picnic tables at 2 to 3 different locations.

If you are interested in helping with the off-season work, please call me at 746-2513
